Anesthesia

Also known as: total hip replacement anesthesia, THA anesthesia, hip replacement anesthesia

Anesthesia for open procedures involving total hip replacement arthroplasty. Covers general or regional anesthesia for primary total hip arthroplasty, one of the most commonly performed orthopedic procedures.

Clinical Context

Used when providing anesthesia for primary total hip arthroplasty for osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis, fracture, or inflammatory arthritis. Neuraxial anesthesia (spinal) with sedation is preferred by many centers due to reduced blood loss, improved pain control, and lower VTE risk. May also use general anesthesia.
