Clinical Context

Used when providing anesthesia for transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) placement and other intrahepatic/portal venous interventions. TIPS is performed for portal hypertension with variceal bleeding or refractory ascites. Patients typically have advanced liver disease with associated coagulopathy.
