Microscopic examination of stained smears using fluorescent stains and acid-fast stains to detect acid-fast bacteria, particularly Mycobacterium species.

Clinical Context

Critical for rapid detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in sputum and other specimens. AFB staining is the first-line screening for tuberculosis.
