Also known as: leg amputation high level, proximal transtibial amputation, high BKA
Amputation of the lower leg at the highest level (proximal tibia or fibula). This procedure removes the entire lower leg with surgical closure for severely compromised limbs.
Clinical Context
Performed when tissue compromise extends to proximal tibia. Often indicates extensive trauma, infection, or vascular insufficiency. Results in greater prosthetic challenges but limb is non-viable at lower levels.
