Creation of ileal pouch from small bowel, often in conjunction with total proctocolectomy, to establish internal reservoir and restore intestinal continuity after bowel resection.
Clinical Context
Primarily used during total proctocolectomy for familial adenomatous polyposis or ulcerative colitis. Creates continent reservoir from terminal ileum anastomosed to anus, avoiding permanent external ostomy.
