Autotransplantation of parathyroid tissue, typically removing a parathyroid gland and implanting a portion of it in the forearm muscle or sternocleidomastoid muscle for vascular access.
Clinical Context
Used when total parathyroidectomy is performed (such as in multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome) to preserve parathyroid function by implanting tissue in easily accessible location. Allows future re-operation if hypoparathyroidism develops.
